A schoolboy in Noakhali's Chatkhil upazila, who was severely beaten for kicking a ball on Sunday, died at a hospital in Dhaka early Tuesday.
The deceased is Osman Gani, 15, son of Mizanur Rahman of Mokami Bari of Manikpur village in Badalkot union of the upazila and a seventh grader at Saptagaon Adarsha High School in the upazila.
The attack took place in the yard adjacent to the residence of Siraj Mia in Manikpur village of Badalkot union of the upazila around 2pm on Sunday.
Shah Alam, a cousin of the victim, said a 12-year-old boy was playing with a ball in the courtyard adjacent to a road around 2pm on that day when Osman was using his mobile phone sitting nearby.
Suddenly, the ball came to Osman and he kicked it, causing it to land on the roof of a nearby one-storey building. The 12-year-old boy went home crying and informed his father about the incident. His father, Mohammad Montu, rushed there and beat Osman with a wooden object, leaving him critically injured, Alam added.
With severe head injury, Osman was taken to Noakhali District Hospital from where he was shifted to Dhaka for better treatment. He died while undergoing treatment at the hospital.
Gias Uddin, officer-in-charge (OC) of Chatkhil police station, said: “In this incident, the mother of the victim made a written complaint to the police station. Legal action will be taken against the accused.”
