The Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP) has arrested three people on charges of robbing the passengers of a car and those in a pickup amid a traffic gridlock in the Targach area of Gazipur.
Shahriar Sabbir Shraban alias Mahim, 20, Babu Hossain, 25, and Ali Akbar, 20, had been nabbed with help from Tongi East police, GMP Deputy Commissioner (South) Mahabub-uz-Zaman said on Tuesday.
Late on Monday, the suspected robbers broke down the door of a car stuck in traffic on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway and opened the door of a pickup carrying chicken, threatening those inside with weapons before snatching their mobile phones and Tk15,000 in cash.
When footage of the robberies went viral on social media, the police carried out a raid and arrested the three, almost 12 hours after the incident.
Gachha police station OC Ibrahim Hossain said the police went to the spot after getting a 999 call.
The police at first detained Mahim after identifying him from the viral footage, and later nabbed Babu and Ali on the basis of information provided by Mahim.
On Tuesday afternoon, a businessman named Faruk Hossain filed a case at Gacha police station in connection with the robbery.
