Due to incessant rain and water from upstream, the Jamuna River in Sirajganj has been swelling for the past couple of days, and as a result locals are fearing that a flash flood may hit the district.
River erosion is threatening several villages in Shahjadpur Upazila as at least 20 houses have been washed away by Jamuna in the past two days. People are moving towards shelters and dykes with their belongings and cattle.
The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) in its latest bulletin on Thursday said the Brahmaputra-Jamuna rivers are in a rising trend, which may continue in the next 48 hours, while the Ganges-Padma rivers are in a rising trend, which may continue in the next 72 hours.
Major rivers in the North-Eastern region are rising which may continue in the next 24 hours. According to the weather forecasting agencies, there is a chance of medium to heavy rainfall in the North-Eastern region in the next 24 hours. As a result, the water level of the rivers of this region may rise steadily, the bulletin added.
In the next 24 hours, the Teesta River may flow close to the danger level at Dalia point and the Dudhkumar River may cross to the danger level at Pateshwari point.
Meanwhile, flash floods inundated different areas in Kishoreganj haor. According to the Water Development Board in Kishoreganj, the water level in different rivers has increased significantly in the last 24 hours.
In Kurigram, all the rivers have started to swell, triggered by the onrush of water from the upstream and rain, inundating low-lying areas in different upazilas.
Some 10,000 people in the char areas have been affected as the river water entered their houses and submerged the roads.
