On the third Jummah prayers of the holy month of Ramadan on Friday, a large number of people gathered at mosques across the country to pray for rain to bring some relief from the scorching heat.
They also prayed for protection from the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, which arrived in the country in March last year.
In the West Panthapath Jame Mosque, crowds of worshipers were seen on each floor. Due to lack of space, some performed prayers on the side of the road as well. City dwellers were seen praying all the way from the Science lab to the Bata Signal, reports Bangla Tribune.
Mehdi Hasan, who prays at the Shahi Mosque in Laxmibazar of the capital, said: “We prayed to God to protect our country and all the countries of the world from the coronavirus. We have prayed for rain to protect us from the scorching sun.”
Journalist Chhalim Ullah Mezbah said: “I prayed at the Green Corner Mosque. Some people wore masks but not everyone, including me.
“Prayers are offered for people infected with coronavirus in Bangladesh, India and around the world. Prayers are offered for the forgiveness of crimes, recovery, mercy and blessings. Prayers are offered for a debt-free life,” he added.
Maulana Ansarul Haque Imran performed the Friday prayers at a mosque in the Madhurbazar area of Kamrangirchar.
He said: “A lot of people used to gather at this mosque for Friday prayers. Subjects of prayers included protection from coronavirus, rain and many other things.”
Earlier on Monday, more than a hundred worshipers took part in prayers for rain and relief from severe drought and intense heat in the Vetkhali area of Shyamnagar upazila in Satkhira. The prayers were conducted by Maulana Nur Alam.
According to the organizers, prayers will be offered at the same time for the next two days after the Nafl prayers.
