Police have apprehended one suspect after witnessing video footage of a group of men stripping a woman and violating her in Noakhali's Begumganj upazila.
The video footage of five men torturing the woman went viral on social media platforms on Sunday and raised concerns among netizens.
Locals said the incident took place at a certain Noor Islam’s house in Khalpar area of the upazila 20/25 days ago. However, they were unsure about the exact date of the assault .
After the video went viral, police detained a youth named Abdur Rahim, 22, for questioning, police sources said.
According to the video and the locals, five youths Delowar, Badal, Kalam, Abdur Rahim along with an unnamed youth – all members of a criminal gang Delowar Bahini -- stripped the woman naked and brutally tortured her.
Witnessing the incident via Facebook, Superintendent of Police Alamgir Hossain directed the Begumganj Model police station OC to investigate the matter.
Begumganj OC Harun-or-Rashid said: “We arrested a youth who was involved in the torture and five different police teams are working to arrest the rest.
“We also found the woman from her paternal house but she was unable to provide us with the exact date of the incident.”
