Bangladesh recorded 37 more deaths from Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, taking the number of recorded coronavirus fatalities to 5,044.
The country also logged more than 353,000 coronavirus cases with 1,666 people having tested positive over the same period.
With this development, the number of all confirmed cases so far jumped to 353,844.
The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) revealed the latest figures on Covid-19 in the country with a press release on Wednesday.
Of the 37 deceased, including 24 men, 23 were from Dhaka division, five each from Chittagong and Khulna, two from Rajshahi, and one each from Sylhet and Barisal divisions.
So far, 3,914 men (77.60%) and 1,130 women (22.40%) have died from Covid-19 across the country.
The mortality rate against the total number of cases detected so far stands at 1.43%.
The DGHS said 13,977 samples were collected from suspected Covid-19 patients in the last 24 hours.
As many as 14,150 samples, including the pending ones, were tested in the 102 authorized labs -- government and private -- across the country and 1,666 new patients were confirmed.
The latest figures show an infection rate of 11.77%.
To date, 1,862,637 tests have been conducted in the country, leading to an overall infection rate of 18.91% so far.
The health authorities said 2,163 people recovered from the disease over the preceding 24 hours.
So far, 262,953 patients — 74.64% of all infected — have made full recovery across the country.
On March 8, health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a new coronavirus strain which was later named Sars-CoV-2.
The novel coronavirus broke out in China's Wuhan city in late December 2019 and quickly spread throughout the world, becoming a pandemic in less than three months.
The fast spreading coronavirus has claimed 976,134 lives and infected 31,823,658 people across the world till Wednesday afternoon, according to Worldometer.
As many as 23,425,868 people have recovered from Covid-19 which has spread to 213 countries and territories across the planet.
