The second flash floods from Wednesday has affected thousands of families, even as the water levels continue to fluctuate

Local officials are concerned it may get worse, even as people remain waterlogged.

In Gaibandha, while the floodwater has receded, the train lines to Lalmonirhat, Gaibandha, Kurigram, and Rangpur have been down for the past 10 days. There are grave concerns that if conditions do not improve soon, homebound passengers for Eid-ul-Azha will be in serious trouble.

Bangladesh Railway (West) General Manager Shahidul Islam said authorities are working round the clock to restore the service.

In Hili, Hakimpur Government Degree College was forced to shut down after it was deluged following several days of continuous downpour. Families who live in the vicinity of the college are also affected by the flood.

In Lalmonirhat, flood conditions have improved somewhat as the Teesta is flowing 15cm below the danger level. Authorities are distributing relief material among nearly 29,000 families.

In Naogaon, the flood swelled greatly once it broke through the barrages of the Atrai and Jamuna rivers. The floodwaters swept over 3,230 hectares of farmland, ruining the rice harvest. Hundreds of thousands of farmers lament their losses, almost nothing of which can be recouped.

Taiyeb Ali Sarker from Nilphamari, Tazul Islam Reza from Gaibandha, Halim Al Raji from Hili, and Moazzem Hossain from Lalmonirhat contributed to this report.
