Ducsu Polls: DU appoints chief returning officer

A 15-member advisory committee was also formed as the university geared up for polls

The Dhaka University (DU) authority on Thursday appointed Professor SM Mahfuzur Rahman of the International Business department as chief returning officer for the long awaited Central Students’ Union election of the university which remained dysfunctional for 28 years.

DU Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof M Akhtaruzzaman appointed Prof Mahfuz under the section 8(e) of the existing Ducsu constitution also formed a 15-member Advisory Council as the university geared up for the poll, said a press release from the university on Thursday afternoon.

The members of the Advisory Council are: Kazi Shahidullah, prof of history department, Prof ASM Maksud Kamal, president of DU Teachers’ Association (DUTA), Prof Shibli Rubiatul Islam, DUTA general secretary, Prof Mohammad Abdul Aziz, dean of science faculty, Prof Hasanuzzaman, dean of engineering and technology faculty, Prof Shafiq Uz Zaman, chairman of economics department, Prof AKM Noor-un-Nabi, of population Science department, Prof AQM Mahbub, of geography and environment science department, Prof Belayet Hossain, of marketing department, Prof Tofail Ahmed Chowdhury, of Chemistry department, Prof Syed Farhad Anwar, director of Institute of Business Administration (IBA),  Prof Bismadeb Chowdhury, chairman of Bangla department, Prof ASM Atiqur Rahman, of social welfare and research institute, Prof Sajeda Banu, of mathematics department and Prof Sharmin Rumi Alim, of nutrition and food science institute.

Meanwhile, DU VC Prof Akhtaruzzaman at a joint meeting sought all support from everyone to hold a free, fair and peaceful Ducsu poll.

The DU authority also held a meeting with all Teacher Student Center (TSC) based 22 socio-cultural organizations of the university on Thursday morning at the Abdul Matin Chowdhury Digital Classroom to exchange view about the Ducsu polls.

Earlier on Wednesday, The DU unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League, student wing of the Awami League, staged demonstrations on the university campus demanding that the Ducsu polls be held immediately.

On January 6, the Supreme Court vacated its earlier order that stayed a High court order asking the DU authorities to take necessary steps within the next six months to hold Ducsu election.
