Student killed by political leader for refusing to get cigarette

A leader of Swechchhasebak League in Bogra stabbed the college student when the latter refused to fetch a cigarette

Update : 09 Dec 2018, 11:47 PM

A college student was stabbed by a local leader of Awami Swechchhasebak League for refusing to fetch him cigarettes in Bogra.

Shahjanpur police station OC Zia Latiful Islam confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune on Sunday.

Maruf Morshed Pralay, leader of Swechchhasebak League’s Shahjanpur unit in Bogra, asked Rakibul Hasan Hridoy, a twelfth grader in Government Shah Sultan College, to fetch him a cigarette near the college premises.

When Hridoy refused to do so, Pralay stabbed him on his chest and fled the scene, the OC said.

Locals immediately rushed a bleeding Hridoy to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital.

As his condition deteriorated, his family attempted to bring him to Dhaka for better treatment, but he succumbed to his injuries on the way, near Tangail, in the evening.

Police detained Pralay’s associate Talha, 17, for questioning him in connection with the incident.

Speaking to the Dhaka Tribune, Bogra Awami League (South) leader Shahidul Islam Bappi said Pralay was just a member of Swechchhasebak League – not a leader. “Action will be taken against him if he is found responsible for the student’s death,” he added.
