A group of miscreants publicly attacked police officers in the Kawran Bazar railway line area of the capital, snatching a drug trafficker from their custody. Three police members, including a sub-inspector (SI), were injured in the incident.
The attack occurred on Tuesday at around 5pm. The injured police officers are SI Ikhtia Hossain, Constable Biplob, and Constable Delwar Hossain.
Video footage of the attack on the police has already spread on social media. The footage shows one police officer holding onto a handcuffed suspect when several armed thugs attack the police.
At one point, the thugs manage to snatch the detained suspect away from the injured police officer and flee.
According to sources from Tejgaon police station, .the injured officers have been rescued and admitted to Rajarbagh Police Hospital A case has been filed at Tejgaon Police Station naming seven individuals and 10-15 unidentified persons as accused.
Injured SI Ikhtiar Hossain detailed the incident to media, saying: "That afternoon, two other police officers and I were patrolling the Kawran Bazar area on foot. When we were near the Kamarpatti railway line, several drug traffickers saw us and tried to flee.”
He added: “At that time, we managed to apprehend a person named Shaheen, 25, who had a bag containing small packets of cannabis."
He continued: "Immediately after the arrest, other drug traffickers began throwing stones at us. To protect ourselves, we took shelter beside a pillar of the elevated expressway. However, we were not safe there either.”
He further added: “Several armed individuals attacked me indiscriminately. A person named Din Islam Kalu struck my neck with the blunt side of a cleaver.”
He also said: “At that moment, the detained Shaheen also began to attack. Eventually, his accomplices forcibly removed the handcuffs and snatched him away."
The investigation officer of the case, SI Joydeb Kumar Basu of Tejgaon police station, said: "The injured police members have filed a case.
He added: “One of the accused named in the First Information Report (FIR) has been arrested and sent to court on Wednesday night. Operations are ongoing to arrest the other suspects."
Police have said that special operations are underway to arrest the suspects. All individuals involved in the incident will be brought to justice soon.
