Update : 21 Sep 2018, 12:01 AM

The flood situation worsened in the Bogra, Gaibandha, and Jamalpur districts on Thursday. Croplands, roads, and educational institutions were inundated, causing immense suffering for thousands of people.

Bogra

The flood situation in Sariakandi, of the district, worsened as water levels of the Jamuna River continued to rise on Thursday.

The river was flowing 21cm above the danger mark in the morning—4cm more than the previous day’s levels.

However, after 3pm, the water level diminished by 3cm, said Water Development Board (WDB) Executive Engineer Hasan Mahmud.

Villagers along the riverbank are seeking shelter in dry places and some went to their relatives' homes.

Standing crops on around 615 hectares of land have been affected. Classes at 21 primary schools and three secondary schools have been suspended because of the flood, said Sariakandi Agricultural Officer Shahaduzzman and Education Officer Rafiqul Alam.

Gaibandha

At least 57 primary schools have been closed in Sundarganj upazila as the institutions have crumbled in recent floodwater.

Thousands of people living on chars (shoals) and river basins in the upazila have been marooned—with the ongoing flood situation deteriorating as water in the Brahmaputra and other rivers saw a further rise.

WDB officials said the water levels of the Brahmaputra were flowing seven centimetres above its danger level, at the Fulchharighat point of the district.

In total 1,450 hectares in Sundarganj, 350 hectares in Phulchhari, and 30 hectares in Shaghata, of standing crops, were damaged, they said.

The district’s Deputy Commissioner Goutam Chandra Paul said steps have been taken to provide help for the flood-affected people in the district.

Jamalpur

Floodwaters in the district have started receding but the situation remains unchanged.

WDB officials said the water level of the Jamuna River fell 2cm, but it was still flowing 4cm above the danger level at Bahadurabad ghat point.

District Relief and Rehabilitation Office sources said hundreds of people, families, in: Islampur, Dewanganj, Bakshiganj, and Sarishabari upazila, have been affected by the flood.

The Department of Agriculture Extension Office said more cropland was inundated— raising the toll to thousands of hectares lost across several areas of the district.
