Covid-19: Bangladesh logs zero daily deaths after 96 days

217 more people tested positive at a 1.75% infection rate in 24 hours

Bangladesh logged zero Covid-related deaths in the 24 hours till Tuesday morning after more than three months amid signs that the pandemic is easing with a declining positivity rate.

The country recorded zero deaths from Covid-19 in a 24-hour period last time on December 9 last year, data compiled by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) show.

This year, Bangladesh recorded double digit deaths on January 13 for the first time with 12 deaths and the trend continued for over a month and a half. In the first fifteen days in March, deaths remained in single digits except for March 5, when 13 deaths were reported

Bangladesh confirmed its first Covid-19 death on March 18, 2020 and the country's Covid-19 death toll currently stands at 29,112.

The seven-day moving average of single-day deaths in Bangladesh was 2.28 on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the health authorities reported 217 more infections during the 24-hour period.

The daily positivity rate declined to 1.54% from Monday’s 1.75% after a testing of 14,074 samples during the period.

With the latest report, the country’s total fatalities remained static at 29,112 while the caseload rose to 19,49,942.

Meanwhile, the mortality rate remained unchanged at 1.49%.

The recovery rate rose to 95.61% with the recovery of 1,600  more patients during the 24-hour period.

On January 28, Bangladesh logged its previous highest daily positivity rate at 33.37%, reporting 15,440 cases and 20 deaths.

Besides, the country registered the highest daily caseload of 16,230 on July 28 last year, while the highest number of daily fatalities was 264 on August 10 last year.

Bangladesh reported its first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a strain of coronavirus later named Sars-CoV-2, on March 8, 2020. The first death was reported 10 days later.

A large number of the population has also been vaccinated, with the country crossing the landmark of administering 100 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines on December 1, nearly 10 months after launching a nationwide campaign.

The fast-spreading coronavirus has so far claimed over six million lives and infected over 460 million people throughout the world, according to Worldometer.

More than 393 million people have recovered from the disease, which has affected 223 countries and territories across the planet.
