Students aged 12 and over will have to get at least the first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine to attend in-person classes in schools.
Cabinet Secretary Khandker Anwarul Islam made the announcement to the media on Thursday following the weekly cabinet meeting headed by the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
“The Ministry of Education has already been informed about this. The issue has been discussed on Monday, and the minister has been instructed in the cabinet meeting,” he said.
The Ministry of Education will issue a formal notification by Thursday, said the cabinet secretary.
Bangladesh started inoculating school students, aged between 12 and 17, last year. The authorities plan to expand the drive nationwide soon.
Responding to a query on vaccinating of children under 12 years, Islam said that the government was trying to bring all children under the coverage of vaccination.
"No one can go anywhere, including restaurants and travelling by aircrafts, without getting two doses of vaccines. And if the situation worsens, a decision may be taken on making public transport carry passengers at half capacity,” he added.
The government will sit with the technical committee within a day or two and announce a decision, said Secretary Islam. “But the decision about school students have been conveyed to the educational institutions already.”
