Bangladesh to receive over 3.7m doses of Sinopharm vaccine by Saturday

Till Wednesday, Bangladesh has received a total of 11.57 million doses of the Sinopharm vaccine

Bangladesh hopes to receive 3.7 million doses of the Sinopharm vaccine by Saturday under the Covax facility as well as supply from purchase and gift from China.

Of the total amount, the country had already received 1,709,799 doses of the vaccine on Tuesday. 

On Wednesday, Bangladesh received 1.77 million more doses of the vaccine under the Covax facility.

Meanwhile, the Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase (CCGP) on Wednesday approved the procurement of a total of 60 million doses of Sinopharm from China under the Direct Procurement Method (DPM).

The next consignment of 61,200 doses of vaccine would be received on Thursday under the Covax facilities, he added.

Besides, 2 million doses of the Sinopharm vaccine are scheduled to arrive on Friday and Saturday in two consignments, one million doses each, the official said, but receiving time was yet to be confirmed as the authorities did not yet know of any schedule for the flights.

Among the 2 million doses, 1 million would be received as a gift from China while the remaining 1 million would be received as purchased consignment, said Assistant Director of Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) Dr Hasib, quoting the health minister.

The vaccines are being stored in several storage facilities, including Beximco warehouse, EPI storage and other available sources and to ensure second doses for the vaccine recipients they have already started distributing the received vaccine, he added. 

Bangladesh received 9.8 million doses of the Sinopharm Covid-19 vaccine till Tuesday and administered 7,039,183 doses till that day. 

It means the government has 2,760,817 doses of vaccine in hand. 

Till now, 6,827,383 people have received the first dose and among them 211,800 also received the second dose of the Sinopharm vaccine. 

It means 6,615,583 people who have taken the first dose of the vaccine are waiting for the second dose and to complete their vaccination the country is in further need of 3,854,766 doses of the Sinopharm vaccine.
