As the upward trend of Covid-19 cases remains no longer focused on in and around Dhaka city, the border districts, including Satkhira, Thakurgaon, Jessore, Bagerhat and Narail are now bearing the brunt.
The test positivity rate in Satkhira in the last 24 hours until Wednesday morning was 60% and it was 58.82% in Thakurgaon, 44.27% in Jessore, 43. 87% in Bagerhat and 38.15% in Narail.
As most of the districts with growing infection rate lie in Khulna Division, the latter has turned out to be the most affected with 36.05% test positivity rate. The health authorities there tested the samples of 1,545 suspected patients and the results of 557 samples came out as positive over the preceding 24 hours.
On the other hand, among all divisions, Dhaka is now the least affected with the infection rate reaching 7.02%.
Rangpur Division holds second position in terms of infection with 32.03% test positivity rate, followed by Barisal 18.18%, Sylhet 16.37%, Rajshahi 14.53%, Chittagong 11.64%, Mymensingh 10.08%.
In Bangladesh, another 36 people died from Covid-19 in a 24-hour span till Wednesday morning, when 2,37 new cases were confirmed, at the test positivity rate of 2.33%.
The average infection rate now stands at 13.39%, with the mortality rate logged at 1.58%.
Scene outside Dhaka
Of the new fatalities, seven were in the Khulna Corona Dedicated Hospital alone. Till date, 295 people have died while undergoing treatment at the hospital.
Meanwhile, 81 new cases were identified there. Of them, 49 samples came from Khulna city and district, 26 from Bagerhat, two each from Jessore and Pirojpur, and one each from Gopalganj and Jhenaidah, according to Khulna Medical College Hospital PCR lab.
“At least 129 patients are currently undergoing treatment at our hospital,” said Dr Suhas Ranjan Haldar, resident medical officer of Khulna Medical College Hospital and the focal person of the Covid Unit, on Tuesday morning.
Of them, 63 are admitted in the red zone, 28 in the yellow zone, 20 in the intensive care units (ICUs) and 19 in the high dependency units (HDUs), he added.
Meanwhile, our correspondent reports that eight more Covid-19 patients died at Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital (RMCH) alone on Wednesday.
"Of the deceased, four had tested positive for Covid-19. Among them, one was from Chapainawabganj district and the other three from Rajshahi district," said RMCH Deputy Director Saiful Ferdous.
The remaining four who died at the hospital in the past 24 hours, showed symptoms of Covid-19, he said. Of them, two were from Rajshahi, and two from Chapainawabganj.
In the past 24 hours, 35 patients have been admitted to the Covid-19 unit of the hospital. With the fresh patients, a total of 227 people are currently undergoing treatment at the hospital.
With the latest development, the overall death tally of Covid-19 patients at RMCH since June 1 now stands at 80.
The hospital is struggling to accommodate the rising number of Covid-19 patients, officials said.
