Covid-19: Bangladesh records lowest daily death toll in 25 days

57 deaths and 2,177 new infections reported in the last 24 hours

Bangladesh registered 57 deaths from Covid-19 in the 24 hours to Friday morning, taking the total number of deaths in the country to 11,450.

The latest single-day death toll is the lowest since April 6, when health authorities recorded 66 deaths. On April 5, the daily Covid-19 death toll was 52.

The country also logged a total of 759,132 coronavirus cases with 2,177 people testing positive over the past 24 hours.

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) revealed the latest figures on Covid-19 in the country through a press release on Friday.

Of the 57 deceased – 32 men and 25 women – 28 were from Dhaka division; 13 from Chittagong; five each from Khulna and Sylhet; and two each from Rajshahi, Barisal, and Rangpur divisions.

Of them, 37 patients died in government hospitals, 18 in private hospitals, and two on their way to the hospital. 

Thirty-five of the deceased patients were aged above 60, 13 between 51 and 60, seven between 41 and 50, one aged between 31 and 40, and one aged between 21 and 30.

So far, 8,353 men (72.95%) and 3,097 women (27.05%) have died from Covid-19 across the country. 

Since the beginning, 6,686 people have died in Dhaka division, 2,066 in Chittagong, 599 in Rajshahi, 698 in Khulna, 343 in Barisal, 394 in Sylhet, 422 in Rangpur, and 242 in Mymensingh.

The mortality rate against the total number of cases detected so far stands at 1.51%.

The health authorities said 4,325 people recovered from the disease over the preceding 24 hours.

So far, 681,426 patients – 89.76% – have made full recovery across the country.

As many as 21,046 samples, including the pending ones, were tested in the 419 authorized labs -- government and private -- across the country.

The latest figures show an infection rate of 10.38% which was higher than Thursday. The overall infection rate of the country stands at 13.88%.

Currently, 19,449 people are in isolation and 50,591 are quarantined.

As of Friday, another 10 people got the first dose, taking the total number of first doses to 5,819,656. While 107,539 got the second dose during the same time, taking the total vaccinated to 2,805,694.

On March 8, health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a new coronavirus strain which was later named Sars-CoV-2.

The novel coronavirus broke out in China's Wuhan city in late December, 2019 and quickly spread throughout the world, becoming a pandemic in less than three months.

The fast spreading coronavirus has claimed 3,182,057 lives and infected 151,234,156 people across the world till Friday afternoon, according to Worldometer.

As many as 128,648,924 people have recovered from Covid-19 which has spread to 220 countries and territories across the planet.
