Tanima Tonny, a joint member secretary of Khulna district’s Jubo Shakti, has been named the prime accused in the shooting of Motaleb Shikdar, Khulna Divisional convener of the National Citizens Party’s (NCP) labor unit.
An attempted murder case was filed Tuesday afternoon by the victim’s wife, Rahima Akter Fahima, at Sonadanga Model Police Station. Seven to eight unidentified individuals were also accused in the case.
The incident took place around 11am Monday at Tonny's rented residence in Sonadanga, where Motaleb was shot. He was rescued and admitted to Khulna Medical College Hospital. Doctors said the bullet grazed his head, and he is now out of danger.
Tonny was detained Monday night by the Detective Branch (DB) of Khulna Metropolitan Police from the Sadar Police Station area. Her appointment as joint member secretary of Jubo Shakti was approved on October 4 by the organization’s Convener, Advocate Md Tarikul Islam, and Member Secretary, Dr Zahedul Islam.
Rafiqul Islam, officer-in-charge of Sonadanga Model Police Station, said: “The victim’s wife filed an attempted murder case Tuesday afternoon, naming Tonny as the principal accused. During interrogation after her detention, we obtained the names of others involved. We are verifying the information, but for the sake of the investigation, other names are not being disclosed.”
Tonny, who claimed to be pregnant, is currently receiving treatment under police custody at the prison cell of Khulna Medical College Hospital.
