Covid-19: Daily deaths below 80 for 2 days in a row

Bangladesh logs 77 deaths, 2,955 new cases in 24 hours

Bangladesh has registered 77 deaths from Covid-19 in the 24 hours to Wednesday morning. With this development, the country’s death tally remained below 80 for two consecutive days.

The latest single-day death toll is the lowest since April 13 when the health authorities recorded 69 deaths.

Meanwhile, a total of 2,955 people tested positive over the 24-hour period, The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) revealed the latest figures on Covid-19 in the country with a press release on Wednesday.

With the latest development, the total number of deaths reached 11,305 in the country while the number of cases stood at 754,614.

The seven-day moving average of daily deaths in the country stood at 88.86 which was lower than Tuesday.

Of the 77 deceased – 43 men and 34 women – 46 were from Dhaka division; nine from Chittagong; seven from Khulna; five each from Rajshahi and Barisal; two each from Sylhet and Mymensingh; and one from Rangpur division.

Of them, 49 patients died in government hospitals, 27 in private hospitals, and one at home. 

Fifty-two of the deceased patients were aged above 60, 12 between 51 and 60, three between 41 and 50, eight aged between 31 and 40, and two aged between 21 and 30.

So far, 8,269 men (73.14%) and 3,036 women (26.86%) have died from Covid-19 across the country. 

Since the beginning, 6,610 people have died in Dhaka division, 2,031 in Chittagong, 593 in Rajshahi, 692 in Khulna, 337 in Barisal, 384 in Sylhet, 418 in Rangpur, and 240 in Mymensingh.

The mortality rate against the total number of cases detected so far stands at 1.5%.

The health authorities said 5,392 people recovered from the disease over the preceding 24 hours.

So far, 672,319 patients – 89.09% – have made full recovery across the country.

As many as 28,206 samples, including the pending ones, were tested in the 358 authorized labs -- government and private -- across the country.

The latest figures show an infection rate of 10.48% which was lower than Tuesday. The overall infection rate of the country stands at 13.91%.

Currently, 19,354 people are in isolation and 52,224 are quarantined.

On Wednesday, another 325 people got the first dose, taking the total number of first doses to 5,819,616. While 120,861 got the second dose during the same time, taking the total vaccinated to 2,579,084.

On March 8, health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a new coronavirus strain which was later named Sars-CoV-2.

The novel coronavirus broke out in China's Wuhan city in late December, 2019 and quickly spread throughout the world, becoming a pandemic in less than three months.

The fast spreading coronavirus has claimed 3,151,912 lives and infected 149,446,904 people across the world till Wednesday afternoon, according to Worldometer.

As many as 127,124,459 people have recovered from Covid-19 which has spread to 220 countries and territories across the planet.
