National Professor Anisuzzaman, who died on Thursday, was infected with the novel coronavirus.
"The doctors at Combined Military Hospital (CMH) tested his samples which came back positive," his son Ananda Zaman told reporters.
One of the most pre-eminent educators in Bangladesh, Anisuzzaman was pronounced dead by doctors at 4.55pm.
The 83-year-old was hospitalized late last month with various health complications.
