Rail services between Dhaka and northern Bangladesh were suspended after a carriage of the Neel Sagar Express derailed near Mahera railway station in Mirzapur, Tangail, on Thursday morning.
The incident occurred around 9:30am, leaving trains stranded at several stations and causing inconvenience to passengers.
Sohel Rana, station master at Mahera railway station, said the train was travelling from Dhaka to Chilahati when the wheels of one of its rear carriages went off the tracks near the station.
The derailment damaged a block point, a key component of the railway track system, disrupting train movement on the route.
Sohel said the authorities had been informed and a relief train had been requested to clear the affected section. He expected it to arrive shortly.
He said a mechanical fault might have caused the derailment, adding that no problems had been detected with the tracks at his station.
