Ducsu polls: Candidates submit nomination papers

A total of 237 candidates will vie for 25 Ducsu posts and a total of 593 candidates will compete in 18 hall unions

Aspirants of different student bodies, platforms, and independent candidates, submitted their nomination forms on Tuesday, ahead of the upcoming Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Ducsu) and hall union polls scheduled for March 11.

So far, eight panels ave been announced, including the ruling Awami League backed Bangladesh Chhatra League, main opposition BNP backed Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, leftist student body allies, The Progressive Students’ Alliance and Anti-imperialism Students’ Unity, two factions of Bangladesh Chhatra League JSD (Ambia), and Bangladesh Chhatra Moitri.

Apart from these, Bangladesh General Students’ Rights Protection Council, the platform which led the quota reform movement last year, and Independent Alliance, also announced their panel.

Meanwhile, President of Dhaka University Journalist Association (DUJA), ARM Asifur Rahman, submitted his nomination form as an independent candidate, vying for the office of Ducsu’s general secretary.

Leaders of the student wings and platforms said their panel candidates submitted nomination forms within the stipulated timeframe fixed by the university administration.

Chhatra League rebel group withdraws panel

Meanwhile, the ‘rebel panel’ of Chhatra League has withdrawn its panel from the polls.

The members of the panel formed by former Chhatra League leaders announced the decision after a meeting with central leaders of the Awami League.

Awami League Joint General Secretary Jahangir Kabir Nanak said they had a fruitful discussion with the rebel panel where they heard their complaints and  asked them to have faith in the party chief, urging them to work together to ensure victory for the Chhatra League panel.

Earlier on Monday, the faction of the student body led by the vice president of the recently dissolved central committee, Sohan Rahman Khan, announced a separate panel with him vying for the vice president post.

He nominated Aminul Islam Bulbul, former organizing secretary of Shaheed Sergeant Zahurul Haque hall, and former deputy secretary of central unit, Md Roni, as general secretary and assistant general secretary respectively.

Earlier on Sunday, Chhatra League Central President, Rezwanul Haque Chowdhury Shovon, General Secretary Golam Rabbani, and DU unit General Secretary, Md Saddam Hussain, announced their candidacy for the vice president, general secretary, and assistant general secretary positions respectively, for the long awaited polls.

A total of 237 candidates will vie for 25 Ducsu posts and a total of 593 candidates will compete in 18 hall unions, where there are 13 posts in each dormitory.
