Garment workers and other passengers heading home to vote blocked the Nabinagar-Chandra highway in Ashulia’s Bypail area on Tuesday morning, alleging that bus operators were charging excessive fares.
The blockade began around 8am and continued until approximately 10am, causing traffic congestion along the busy stretch.
Passengers said Monday was the last working day for many garment factory workers ahead of the election, prompting a rush to return to their village homes. They alleged that bus drivers and helpers took advantage of the increased demand by charging inflated fares.
Mukhles, a passenger travelling to Jamalpur, said fares had more than tripled.
“After 17 years, there is an election atmosphere. I want to go home to Jamalpur. The fare used to be Tk300, but now they are asking for Tk1,000,” he said, demanding that authorities ensure fair pricing.
Abul Kalam Sohag, a garment worker heading to Rajshahi, echoed the complaint.
“After factory holidays, workers are returning home to vote. But bus drivers are asking for double the usual fare. Earlier it was Tk500, now they are demanding more than Tk1,000. How can garment workers afford that?” he said, adding that the situation could prevent many from travelling home to cast their votes.
Sheikh Shahjahan, officer-in-charge of Savar Highway Police Station, said there was heavy passenger pressure on the highway.
“Due to the excess number of passengers, many were standing on the road, creating congestion. However, we have not received any confirmed information about a blockade,” he said.
