DU VC: Strict measures against anyone creating unrest

The vice chancellor has also stood firm on the issue of not re-running the Ducsu election

Update : 13 Mar 2019, 06:11 PM

University authorities will take stern action against anyone trying to sow chaos or create unrest by breaking university discipline, Vice Chancellor (VC) of Dhaka University Prof Akhtaruzzaman has said.

"If anyone tries to create a chaotic situation in the university by disrupting the university order and regulations, the authorities will be forced to take action against that individual or group," the VC said on Wednesday afternoon.

He also said there is no possibility of re-running the Dhaka University Central Students' Union (Ducsu) election, echoing similar sentiments to those he expressed on Tuesday.

“The Ducsu election was held as per rules and regulations. It is not possible to re-run the election,” he said on Tuesday.

He said: “The students have given their mandate and it is not possible to make another decision about re-running the election based on anyone’s demand.”

The students have continued their protests demanding a re-run of the election—citing irregularities—and the withdrawal of the VC on Wednesday.

Around 150 protesters gathered in front of the VC's office, while a few of them submitted a memorandum bearing their demands to the VC.

The protesters were part of a procession of 500 people—including Ruqayyah Hall students, CSE department students, five central panel candidates and general students—which left from the base of the Raju Sculpture.

Vice President of Ducsu and Quota Reform Movement leader Nurul Haq Nur also expressed his solidarity with the protesting students who are demanding a free and fair re-run of the Ducsu polls.

The Ducsu polls were held after a long gap of 28 years, on Monday.

Bangladesh Chhatra League General Secretary Golam Rabbani won the post of general secretary of Ducsu, and Saddam Hussain won the post of assistant general secretary post. Eight of nine secretary posts went to candidates from the Chhatra League panel.
