Hadi murder: Kabir sent to jail after two rounds of remand

After two rounds of remand totalling 12 days, Kabir was produced before the court on Sunday

Kabir, a close associate and friend of Faisal Karim Masud—the principal accused in the murder case of Sharif Osman Hadi, convenor of the Inqilab Mancha—has been sent to jail following the completion of his remand. On Sunday, Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Jashita Islam passed the order to send him to prison.

After two rounds of remand totalling 12 days, Kabir was produced before the court on Sunday. The investigating officer of the case, Inspector Faisal Ahmed of the Motijheel Zonal Team of the Detective Branch (DB) Police, applied for his detention in jail. Sub-Inspector Ruknuzzaman of the prosecution confirmed the matter.

Kabir was arrested by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) from the Fatullah area of Narayanganj at around 3:30 pm on 15 December. The court granted seven days’ remand on 16 December and a further five days on 23 December.

On 14 December, Abdullah Al Jaber, member secretary of Inqilab Mancha, filed a case of attempted murder. Subsequently, Section 302 (murder) was added to the case. So far, 11 individuals have been shown as arrested in connection with the case. Other accused include Faisal’s father Md Humayun Kabir and mother Mosa Hasi Begum, his wife Saheda Parveen Samia, girlfriend Maria Akter Lima and brother-in-law Wahid Ahmed Sipu, rent-a-car businessman Mufti Md Nuruzzaman Nomani alias Ujjwal, Faisal’s associate Md Kabir, individuals who allegedly assisted in an attempted escape to India— Sibiun Dew and Sanjoy Chisim —and Aminul Islam Raju.

Hadi rose to prominence through the July uprising and the movement demanding the banning of the Awami League. He had announced his intention to contest the 13th parliamentary election as an independent candidate from the Dhaka-8 constituency.

On 12 December at around 2:20pm, while conducting a public outreach campaign in the Bijoynagar area, he came under attack. An assailant sitting on the back of a moving motorcycle opened fire on Hadi, who was travelling in a rickshaw. The bullet struck him in the head.

Hadi was critically injured and rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where he underwent surgery, before being transferred later that night to Evercare Hospital in Dhaka. Doctors described his condition as “extremely critical”.

On 15 December, Hadi was flown to Singapore by air ambulance for further treatment. he died on 18 December while undergoing treatment in Singapore.
