A Dhaka court on Tuesday sent Emamul Hasan Nayan to jail after rejecting his bail petition in the shooting and killing of spice trader Abdur Rahman Bhuiyan, 55, inside his shop in Shyambazar, Old Dhaka.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Hasibuzzaman passed the order following the completion of Nayan’s two-day remand, said SI Sohanuzzaman of the prosecution department.
Police said Nayan was initially arrested in a separate case filed at Kadamtali Police Station and later shown arrested in the murder case filed at Sutrapur Police Station.
According to case sources, the shooting took place on December 11 near Rup Lal Das Lane after Nayan allegedly said the victim needed to be “dealt with.” Abdur Rahman died after being shot in public while heading to his shop.
Nayan was arrested by members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in the Kallyanpur bus stand area around 10:00 p.m. on the day of the incident.
Following the killing, the victim’s son, Shakil Ahmed, filed a case at Sutrapur Police Station, naming Nayan as the prime accused along with three to four unidentified individuals. Abdur Rahman was also president of the Fish Market Association.
