Seven people, including the main accused Moin Uddin Moin, in a case over alleged extortion at the Centre for Kidney Diseases and Urology (CKD) Hospital in Shyamoli, Dhaka, have been sent to jail after completing their remand.

On Friday, Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam in Dhaka rejected their bail petitions and ordered that they be sent to jail.

The accused are Faruk Hossain Suman, Liton Mia, Falan Mia, Md Rubel, Swapon Kazi and Shaon Hossain.

On April 11, Operation Theatre in-charge of CKD Hospital, Md Abu Hanif, filed a case at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station in the capital, alleging extortion. Moin Uddin was named as the prime accused, along with seven to eight unidentified individuals. So far, seven people have been arrested in connection with the case.

After completing a four-day remand, the investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Md Sabbir Ahmed of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station, produced the accused before the court and sought their detention in jail.

Sub-Inspector Rafiqul Islam from the prosecution department said they also prayed for further remand. Defence lawyers sought bail for the accused, while the state opposed the bail petitions. The court subsequently rejected the bail pleas and ordered that they be sent to jail.

On April 14, the court had granted a three-day remand for three people, including Moin Uddin.

According to the case statement, Moin Uddin and his associates had been demanding Tk 5 lakh from CKD Hospital for a long time. When the hospital authorities refused to pay, the accused allegedly threatened Operation Theatre in-charge Hanif in various ways.

On the morning of April 10, they allegedly went to Hanif’s residence in Road No. 3 in Shyamoli under Sher-e-Bangla Nagar and demanded that the door be opened. When it was opened, Moin Uddin allegedly told his wife that they were extortionists and demanded Tk 5 lakh immediately, threatening harm if the money was not paid.

When Hanif’s wife refused to pay, they allegedly behaved in a disorderly manner. Hanif then called his younger brother, Md Monir Talukder, who works at the hospital, to come home.

Later, when Monir arrived, Moin Uddin and his associates allegedly misrepresented the incident and gathered more people. At one stage, they reportedly gathered around 50–60 people in front of CKD Hospital in an attempt to create disorder.

They allegedly staged protests in front of the hospital, shouted slogans, used abusive language and attempted to destabilize the situation. They also reportedly raised threatening slogans against the hospital owner, Md Kamrul Islam.

In addition, they used abusive language and attempted to divert the incident in a planned manner. They also tried to create disorder in front of the hospital’s emergency department, raising concerns about disruption to normal hospital operations.

Police later arrived at the scene after being informed and brought the situation under control.
