A court in Tangail on Monday sentenced three people to death and four others to life imprisonment in the murder case of former Dainya union parishad chairman and former vice-president of Tangail Sadar Thana BNP Rafiqul Islam Faruk, 13 years after the killing.
Judge Md Faisal Al Mamun of Tangail First Additional District and Sessions Court pronounced the verdict this afternoon, confirmed Public Prosecutor (PP) of the court Md Saidur Rahman Swapan.
The death-row convicts are Saniyat Khan Bappa, former vice-president of Chhatra League and son of former lawmaker Ataur Rahman Khan of Collegepara in Tangail town, Md Azad, son of Afzal Fakir of Kagmara area in Sadar upazila and Shahjahan, son of Shahid Mia of Dainya area. All three are absconding.
The four convicts sentenced to life imprisonment are Md Sujon, son of Latif Mia of Jogani area, Sanowar Hossain, son of Rawshan Ali of Dainya, Shafiqul Islam, son of Md Nurul Islam of Char Kagmara and Ruzbel, son of Nur Box of Chhitki Bari area.
The court also fined each of the death-row convicts Tk 100,000 and each of the life-term convicts Tk 50,000. In default of payment, they will have to serve one year of imprisonment.
Another accused, Sanjit Ghosh, son of Amulya Ghosh of Dainya, was acquitted.
According to the prosecution, Faruk used to live in a rented house in Akurtakur area of Tangail town. On December 20, 2013, he went out for a morning walk around 6.30am.
When he reached Bottola Bazar area, a group of assailants shot and hacked him to death. Police later recovered his body from the scene.
The following day, Faruk's younger brother Lavlu Mia filed a murder case with Tangail Sadar Police Station.
After investigation, the then District Detective Branch Inspector and investigation officer Ashok Kumar Singh submitted a charge sheet against eight people to the court on August 13, 2015.
After completing the reinvestigation, Tangail CID Inspector Rafique Uddin Ahmed submitted another charge sheet on April 29, 2018, against the same eight accused.
