Former member of parliament and Jatiya Party Presidium Member Golam Kibria Tipu has been sent to jail in a case filed over an attack on the motorcade of former prime minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia in Dhaka’s Moghbazar area.
The case also includes charges of attempted murder of BNP leaders and activists.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sharifur Rahman passed the order after Tipu was produced in court on Friday.
Police had earlier brought him from custody and requested his detention until the investigation was complete. Sub-Inspector Foyad Ahmed of Hatirjheel police station made the plea.
Arrest and case background
Tipu, a former MP from the Barisal-3 constituency, was arrested by South Keraniganj police on Thursday evening.
According to the case statement, the incident occurred on February 8, 2018, at around 9:50am, when Khaleda Zia was on her way from Gulshan to the Bakshibazar court. Her motorcade came under attack near Moghbazar, leaving several BNP leaders and activists, including the complainant, seriously injured.
The case was filed on November 8, 2024, at Hatirjheel police station. It names 65 individuals as accused, including Jatiya Party Chairman GM Quader and Bangladesh People’s Party Chairman Babul Sardar Chakhari. Golam Kibria Tipu is listed as the 51st accused.
The investigation into the case is ongoing, and the court has directed that Tipu remain in custody until further developments.
