The court also asked the relevant authorities to show cause on the ruling

Update : 14 Feb 2019, 03:13 PM

The High Court directed the authorities concerned to identify and remove all electric poles from roads and highways across the country at the quickest possible time, within 60 days.

The bench of Justice Sheikh Hassan Arif and Justice Razik-Al-Jalil passed the order after hearing a writ filed in the form of a public interest litigation (PIL) on Thursday.

The court also issued a ruling asking the authorities concerned to explain why an order should not be given to identify and remove all dangerous electric poles from roads and highways across the country.

Secretaries to the Roads and Highways division and Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry, chairmen of Power Development Board and Rural Electrification Board, and managing directors of Dhaka Power Distribution Company, Northern Electricity Supply Company Limited and West Zone Power Distribution Company, have been asked to respond to the rule within four weeks.

Barrister Syed Sayedul Haque Sumon stood for the petitioner, while Deputy Attorney General Mukhlesur Rahman represented the state.

On February 9, Supreme Court lawyer Barrister Sumon shared a live video on his Facebook page of electric poles erected in the middle of Shibpur highway in Narsingdi district while he was returning to Dhaka from Sylhet.

Later, he filed a writ in this regard on Wednesday.
