A Jubo Dal leader was hacked to death in Sonargaon upazila of Narayanganj on Wednesday night.

The incident took place in the Char Kishoreganj area around 10pm, said Sonargaon police station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Abdul Barek.

The deceased, Fakir Zahir Rahman, 40, was the son of Abdur Rahman of Kalapaharia union in neighbouring Araihazar upazila. He was a joint convener of the upazila Jubo Dal and president of the union unit of the organization.

The OC told the media that although Zahir was originally from Araihazar, he had been living in a rented house in Munshiganj Sadar for several years. He also owned a pharmacy in Char Kishoreganj.

Citing preliminary findings, the OC said: “As he did every day, he was returning home after closing his pharmacy on Wednesday night. On the way, unidentified assailants hacked him with sharp weapons and left him injured on the road.”

Local residents later rescued him and took him to Munshiganj General Hospital, where he died while undergoing treatment.

The police official said the body was recovered and sent to the morgue of Narayanganj General Hospital for an autopsy.

The identities of those involved and the motive behind the killing were not immediately known. Police are investigating the incident, the OC added.
