Explosion rocks building

Locals said a loud explosion occurred in a room on the second floor of Shah Alam Mia’s six-storey building in Sonapur Uttarpara village around 1:30am.

Hearing the blast, neighbours rushed to the scene, rescued the injured and took them to the burn institute in Dhaka.

Neighbour Latifa Begum said the explosion woke residents with a loud bang and cries for help. The entire building shook from the blast, she said.

She and other residents rushed to the scene and found the four people suffering from burns, reportedly after gas leaked in the kitchen and ignited.

Condition of injured critical

Dr Sultan Mahmud Shikdar, resident surgeon (emergency) at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, said on Sunday morning that all four patients were receiving treatment at the institute.

He said their treatment was continuing based on assessments of their physical condition. All four patients were in critical condition.

Mohammad Abdul Barik, officer-in-charge of Sonargaon police station, said police went to the scene after receiving reports of an explosion caused by a gas leak in Kanchpur.

He confirmed that the four injured people had been admitted to the burn institute.
