A 24-year-old man was hacked to death while getting a haircut at a salon in Arshinagar, Keraniganj, Dhaka, around 3pm on Tuesday.

The deceased, Farhad Hossain, was the son of Md Babul Hossain of Dularhat Police Station in Bhola. He sold fish in the Mohammadpur area and lived in Membergoli, Arshinagar.

Akhtar Hossain, who took Farhad to hospital, said he was Farhad’s cousin and that they used to move around together.

Akhtar said Farhad and 2 others went to a salon around noon. While Farhad was getting a haircut, the other 2 left to attend to another matter.

Shortly afterward, Akhtar went to the front of the salon and found Farhad lying on the road covered in blood. He took Farhad to Bangladesh Medical College Hospital, from where he was transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Akhtar alleged that several people, including local residents Sabbir, Sohel, Arman, Kallu, Rana and Ramiz, attacked Farhad with sharp weapons and shot him before leaving him on the road.

He said they had a longstanding dispute with Farhad and had demanded extortion money from him several times.

Md Habibur Rahman, inspector-in-charge of the Dhaka Medical College Hospital Police Outpost, confirmed the death and said the body had been kept in the morgue for an autopsy.

Meanwhile, a local source claimed that the killing was allegedly orchestrated by Arif alias “Chapa Arif,” described as a leading heroin dealer in Mohammadpur.

According to the source, Arif operates a large drug-selling spot in Cancer Goli in Rayerbazar.

The source said Farhad and his associates had prevented drug sales at the spot over the past few days while demanding extortion money. The spot was subsequently kept closed, and the source claimed the killing may have resulted from the dispute.
