A sub-inspector (SI) of Sadar River police station in Narayanganj has been withdrawn from his post after a video showing him behaving in an intoxicated state went viral on social media.
The incident took place late Friday night in the Central Ferry Ghat area, beside Sadar River police station on the eastern bank of the Shitalakshya River.
Sadar River police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Rakibuzzaman confirmed the matter on Saturday, identifying the officer as Abdul Mannan.
He said senior police officials were informed after the video spread on social media, following which Mannan was withdrawn from his current post.
The OC said police later contacted Mannan’s family and learned that he had been suffering from mental health problems.
In the video, Mannan was seen behaving abnormally and apparently in an intoxicated state. At one point, he sits on the ground and sings, while at other times he dances.
He was later seen crying out in distress. His incoherent speech and unusual behavior drew a crowd of people in the area.
When people present at the scene asked him why he was behaving that way, Mannan said he had consumed alcohol because his wife had assaulted him.
