More than 42,000 vehicles crossed the Bangabandhu Bridge in the last 24 hours as people returned to Dhaka following the Eid holidays, generating toll revenue of Tk3.31 crore.
Syed Riaz Uddin, executive engineer of the Jamuna Bridge site office, confirmed the information on Sunday morning.
According to bridge authorities, a total of 42,374 vehicles crossed the bridge between 12am Friday and 12am Saturday.
Of these, 18,036 vehicles were bound for North Bengal, generating Tk1.60 crore in tolls, while 24,338 Dhaka-bound vehicles contributed Tk1.70 crore.
Traffic pressure
Officials said traffic pressure has increased in recent days as holidaymakers return to the capital.
“Vehicles are crossing through 18 toll booths—nine on each side of the bridge,” Riaz Uddin said, adding that the increased pressure has also led to several accidents on the bridge.
Toll collection on the bridge began after its inauguration in 1998. Previously, the Commuter System Network (CNS) managed toll operations. Since late 2012, toll collection has been handled by China Road and Bridge Corporation.
