They also wanted to buy iPhones for themselves, police say

Update : 19 Dec 2024, 10:04 PM

Three young men attempted to rob Rupali Bank in Keraniganj, Dhaka, to save a kidney patient.

Inspired by movies, they devised the robbery plan, said Superintendent of Police (SP) Ahmad Moeed of Dhaka district.

At a press conference at Keraniganj Model Police Station on Thursday, SP Moeed provided these details about the incident.

SP Ahmad Moeed said: "We received information about a robbery and hostage situation at the bank through the National Emergency Service 999. Upon arriving at the scene, we managed to calm them down in various ways. First, we took the weapons away from them. Subsequently, we persuaded them to surrender to the police.”

The officer revealed that among the three individuals involved, two are 16 years old, while the other is 22.

Motivated by fantasy, possibly from movies or video games, they attempted the robbery.

According to their statement, they needed Tk15 lakh to help a kidney patient. They had packed Tk18 lakh in a bag, intending to assist the patient while also buying iPhones for themselves.

SP Moeed further disclosed that the four firearms recovered from the young men were all toy guns—three plastic and one steel lighter pistol. Additionally, they had two knives, which they had recently purchased.

Earlier in the day, at 5:30pm, law enforcement rescued bank employees from a hostage situation at the Rupali Bank branch in Keraniganj, near Dhaka.

The three young robbers had held the staff hostage and demanded Tk15 lakh as ransom. News of the incident spread after announcements were made from a nearby mosque.
