Students will officially join efforts alongside the police in a bid to enhance traffic control and order on the roads in the capital.

The students will work part-time, performing duties on the roads for four hours each day at important locations.

According to Asif Mahmud Sojib Bhuiyan, the adviser on Youth and Sports, a total of 700 students will be recruited as support staff for the traffic police.

He mentioned that initially, 300 to 400 students will be taken on board, with the remaining numbers to be recruited later.

This announcement was made at a press conference held on Wednesday at his ministry’s conference room, in preparation for the upcoming National Youth Day on November 1.

During the briefing, Asif Mahmud said: “Our target is to recruit 700 students. Initially, we will take in 300 to 400 for traffic management.”

He added that these students will work at crucial points in the capital, specifically during the morning and afternoon peak hours when traffic congestion is highest, each for four hours.

Upon completion of their studies, if the students express interest, the possibility of permanent positions will be considered.

Asif Mahmud also highlighted the larger employment context, noting: “There are 2.6 million unemployed graduates in the country, and the total number of unemployed individuals is 11.8 million. The government plans to create employment for 500,000 youths in the next two years and provide training for 900,000 youths.”
