Speakers at a workshop have said that easy bikes, a variety of locally made three-wheelers, can contribute to traffic management in Cox’s Bazar by providing services to tourists.

They said the drivers of the three-wheelers can also assist the law enforcers in curbing crime in the city.

The workshop was organised by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Cox’s Bazar police at the conference room of the district police lines. Through such workshops, the organisers want to better train 400 easy-bike drivers of the city in four phases.

Speaking as the chief guest, Superintendent of Police Md Rahmat Ullah said the number of easy bikes in Cox’s Bazar is huge. At least 4,000 easy-bike drivers will be brought under a program and given training so that the city becomes safer for tourists.

“If the easy-bike drivers can be brought under training, then the crimes will come down. At the same time, the city will draw more tourists if the drivers of easy bikes, rickshaws, and other vehicles are brought under training. There, they will be brought under training through making a database,” he said.

Mahbubor Rahman, president of Cox’s Bazar Press Club, said the municipality gave licenses to 3,000 easy bikes, but there are now over 5,000 easy bikes in the city. Therefore, there is no alternative to providing training to the drivers, he added.

UNDP representative Masud Karim said his office will provide all-out cooperation in organising training programs for the drivers in this city.

Senior journalist Shamsul Huq Sharek demanded that the licenses issued during the Awami League regime be declared void.
