Covid-19: Bangladesh logs 21 deaths, 1,987 infections in a day

Infection rate further drops to 7.82%

Bangladesh logged 21 more deaths with 1,987 fresh cases from coronavirus in 24 hours till Sunday morning.

The daily positivity rate declined to 7.82% from Saturday’s 8.71% after testing 25,411 samples during the period, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

The latest figures took the case tally to 1,933,291 while total number of fatalities rose to 28,965.

Of the deaths, 12 were reported in Dhaka, four in Chittagong, two in Rangpur, and one each was reported in Rajshahi, Barisal and Sylhet divisions. Of them, 14 were male and the rest were female.

Also, a total of 9,252 Covid-19 patients recovered during the same period across the country, taking the total to 1,754,584.

The latest figures put the mortality rate at 1.5% while the recovery rate at 90.76%. 

The seven-day moving average of single-day deaths in Bangladesh was 20.85 on Sunday.

On Saturday, health authorities reported 13 deaths from coronavirus with 2,150 new infections.

The country has been witnessing a downtrend in terms of infections for the last 13 days straight.

The infection rate in the country on Friday dipped below 10% for the first time since the surge in Covid-19 cases at the turn of the year.

Meanwhile, the government on Sunday decided to lift the Covid-19 restrictions, imposed last month amid Omicron fears, from Tuesday. However, people will have to continue wearing masks outdoor as per the latest decision.

On January 28, Bangladesh logged its earlier highest daily positivity rate at 33.37% reporting 15,440 cases and 20 deaths.

Besides, the country registered the highest daily caseload of 16,230 on July 28 last year, while the highest number of daily fatalities was 264 on August 10 last year.

Bangladesh reported its first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a strain of coronavirus later named Sars-CoV-2, on March 8, 2020. The first death was reported 10 days later.

A large number of the population has also been vaccinated, with the country crossing the landmark of administering 100 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines on December 1, nearly 10 months after launching a nationwide campaign.

The fast-spreading coronavirus has so far claimed over 5.9 million lives and infected over 424 million people throughout the world, according to Worldometer.

More than 349 million people have recovered from the disease, which has affected 223 countries and territories across the planet.
