Covid-19 kills 21 more in Bangladesh, another 1,637 test positive in 24 hours

Bangladesh registered 21 more deaths from Covid-19 in the last 24 hours until Monday morning, taking the number of total fatalities to 5,681.

The country also logged more than 390,000 coronavirus cases with 1,637 people having tested positive over the same period.

With the latest figure, the number of all confirmed cases so far jumped to 390,206, according to the daily virus update released on Monday by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). 

Of the 21 deceased -- 14 men and seven women -- 13 were from Dhaka division, four from Chittagong, three from Rajshahi, and one from Barisal division.

At least 20 of the victims died at different hospitals in the country and one at home.

So far, 4,371 men (76.94%) and 1,310 women (23.06%) have died from Covid-19 across the country.

The mortality rate against the total number of cases detected so far stands at 1.46%.

The DGHS said 15,147 samples were collected from suspected Covid-19 patients in the last 24 hours.

As many as 15,146 samples were tested in the 110 authorized labs — government and private — across the country and 1,637 new patients were confirmed.

The latest figures show an infection rate of 10.81%.

To date, 2,178,714 tests have been conducted in the country, leading to an overall infection rate of 17.91% so far.  

The health authorities said 1,627 people recovered from the disease over the preceding 24 hours.

So far, 305,599 patients — 78.32% of all infected — have made full recovery across the country.

On March 8, health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a new coronavirus strain which was later named Sars-CoV-2.

The novel coronavirus broke out in China's Wuhan city in late December last year and quickly spread throughout the world, becoming a pandemic in less than three months.

 The fast spreading coronavirus has claimed 1,118,886 lives and infected 40,337,134 people across the world till Monday afternoon, according to Worldometer.

As many as 30,138,632 people have recovered from Covid-19 which has spread to 215 countries and territories across the planet.
