Covid-19: 54 die, 2,275 new cases in 24hrs

Total deaths reach 2,928

Bangladesh has witnessed 54 more deaths from Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, taking the number of total fatalities to 2,928.

In addition, the country also logged more than 223,000 coronavirus cases with 2,275 people having tested positive over the same period.

With this development, the number of total confirmed cases jumped to 223,453.

Additional Director General (Administration) of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), Prof Nasima Sultana, revealed the latest figures from Dhaka on Sunday afternoon, in a daily online bulletin on the Covid-19 situation.

She also said that 1,792 people recovered from the disease in the preceding 24 hours.

So far, a total of 123,882 patients have made full recovery across the country.

In terms of the highest number of infections, the country now ranks 17th among the worst-affected countries, according to Worldometer.

Fatality rate 1.31%

Prof Nasima said that of the 54 deceased – 40 men and 14 women – 19 were from Dhaka division, 10 from Chittagong, eight from Khulna, seven from Rajshahi, six from Sylhet, three from Rangpur, and one from Barisal division.

Among the victims, 48 died at different hospitals and six at home, she said.

So far, 2,306 men (78.76%) and 622 women (21.24%) have died from the deadly virus across the country, she said.

She added that the mortality rate at the moment is 1.31% of the total cases so far detected.

22.57% test positivity rate in 24 hours

The DGHS official said 10,441 samples were collected from suspected Covid-19 patients in the last 24 hours.

As many as 10,078 samples were tested in the 81 authorized laboratories across the country.

With 2,275 of the tests coming back positive, the detection rate of new patients in the past 24 hours stood at 22.57%, she said.

To date, 1,111,558 tests have been conducted in the country, leading to an overall infection rate of 20.10% so far.

Covid-19 dedicated hospitals

In the Dhaka metropolitan area, 2,219 patients are undergoing treatment in general beds while 171 in intensive care units (ICUs) at different Covid-19 dedicated hospitals. 

In the Chittagong metropolitan area, 317 patients are currently hospitalized in general beds while 21 others are in ICUs.

Other dedicated hospitals across the country currently have 1,790 people hospitalized. Besides, a total of 93 patients are currently admitted to the ICUs there. 

There are 15,182 general beds and 533 ICUs in total, across the country.

"Bangladesh has 12,326 oxygen cylinders across the country," Nasima Sultana said.

Covid-19 in Bangladesh so far

On March 8, health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by the new coronavirus strain Sars-CoV-2.

The country recorded its first fatality on March 18.

Covid-19 deaths in Bangladesh crossed the 1,000 mark on June 10. The toll reached 2,000 on July 5.

On June 30, the country recorded 64 deaths, which is the highest in a 24-hour span till now.

The number of total cases crossed the 100,000 mark on June 18, and a month later, on July 18, the cases surpassed the 200,000 mark.

On July 2, a total of 4,019 positive cases were recorded, which is the highest in a single day till now.

The novel coronavirus had broken out in China's Wuhan city in late December last year and quickly spread throughout the world, becoming a pandemic in less than three months.

The fast-spreading coronavirus has claimed 648,819 lives and infected 16,223,842 people across the world till Sunday afternoon, according to Worldometer.

As many as 9,925,915 people have recovered from Covid-19 which has spread to 213 countries and territories across the planet.
