Siddikur’s stunning comeback falls four shots short of winner Jazz

Update : 04 Feb 2017, 11:55 PM
Following consistent displays in the first three rounds, Siddikur posted a total of 13-under-par 271 to finish solely as runner-up. Overnight leader Jazz Janewattananond of Thailand bagged his maiden Asian Tour title with four-under-par 67 to win by four shots, ahead of Siddikur. Siddikur's second place is the best ever result by any local participant in the three-year history of the Bangladesh Open. He failed to finish in the top 30 in the previous two editions but was determined to improve his fortunes in the third edition of the Bangladesh Open. His runners-up place is one of his best performance in recent times. The 32-year old golfer began the final day with a calm and confident approach. A flawless display in the opening nine holes saw him card three bogeys. In the other half, he traded a single bogey for three birdies. Only Micah Lauren Shin from USA managed to post 66 on Saturday. “I played really good golf. I struggled with food poisoning earlier this week so to finish second here, I have no complaints. I stayed at home to recuperate earlier this week so I didn’t get much preparation. I am glad I was able to recover in time for the tournament,” an elated Siddikur said after the game. Siddikur only needed a par score in the 18th hole to finish second, with Jazz already ensuring his title. “I was just playing for par on the 18. I heard Dodge [Kemmer] was at 11-under-par in the third so I thought I just needed a par to keep my second place. But I made a birdie there. It’s my favourite hole here,” Siddikur added. Among other local participants, Dulal Hossain finished joint 15th with one-under-par 70 on the final day to post a total of 279 (-five) while Zamal Hossain Molla was placed joint 26th with par 71. Mohammad Sajib Ali and Mohammad Nazim both ended joint 38th, Robin Miah and Badal Hossain finished joint 47th while Mohammad Zia and Mohammad Shomrat Shikder concluded their campaign in the bottom two; 72nd and 73rd respectively. Thailand's Jazz Janewattananond poses with the trophy DHAKA TRIBUNEMeanwhile, 21-year-old Thai golfer Jazz started the round with a four-shot advantage, showing nerves of steel as he completed a sensational wire-to-wire victory with a winning total of 17-under-par 267. The result could be a turning point for Jazz's career after failing to keep his Asian Tour card for the first time last season. American Kemmer secured his best finish in the Asian Tour after returning with a 68 to take third place.Siddikur Rahman, Bangladesh Position: 2ndFinal Round: 66 (-five)Total: 271 (-13) It has been a long time since I last played so well. It was a great round and a superb week. Getting such a huge crowd following me on my home course, I am really thankful. I am happy with how I played too. It has been an excellent week. The course is great and the weather too. Most importantly, I had great home support this week. I am truly appreciative. My parents were out here supporting me and I have my brother Rafiqul [Rahman] on my bag too.Jazz Janewattananond, Thailand Position: 1stFinal Round: 67 (-four)Total: 267 (-17) I have been waiting for this win for so long. I started playing on the Asian Tour when I was an amateur, at 14. It’s just a huge relief that I managed to get the job done. It wasn’t easy. I took a step back as I lost my card for the first time in my career last season. I didn’t make the mark at Qualifying School too. I didn’t get much sleep last night to be honest. Even though I had a four-shot lead, I still wasn’t comfortable heading out. I think this is the longest 18 holes that I have played in my life.LeaderboardPos.
