2017 was the year Bangladeshi heroines made their mark both locally and internationally. The year reminds us of the glass ceilings shattered as few took the lead to represent the contribution of those who make half of the industry. Today’s Showtime's special feature recognises the hard work of the successful women making their way to the hall of fame.
Nusraat Faria:
When TV presenter and model Nusraat Faria entered the film industry with her debut film “Aashiqui”, the industry discovered a promising talent. With “Dhat Teri Ki” and “Premi O Premi” she proved her strong screen presence in 2017. The actress committed to her acting career and worked in a few joint venture productions too. She received heavy criticism for her dance and dress up in the item song “Allah Meherban” of the film “Boss 2.” Later on the production company of the film Jaaz Multimedia changed it to “Yaara Meherbaan” and re-released it. Over all Nusraat Faria was under the limelight throughout the year. Her upcoming film “Inspector Notty K” is set for release on January 19, 2018.Shobnom Bubly:
Bubly made her acting debut in the film “Bossgiri” alongside Shakib Khan back in 2016. Since then Bubly had to never look back. The duo of Shakib and Bubly made back to back hits. But she was a controversial topic this year for her personal life. After several years Apu Biswas revealed the secret of her marriage with Shakib and the birth of their son Abram. The plot met a more complicated twist when Apu hinted an affair between Bubly and Shakib. Bubly became a massive media sensation overnight. Her recent film “Rongbaaj” with Shakib Khan shows their dynamic chemistry on screen.
Bubly soon became involved in her new film “Super Hero” directed by Ashikur Rahman Ashik and produced by Heartbeat Productions. The film will also star Shakib Khan, Tariq Anam Khan and Taskeen Rahman in major roles. Another film of hers titled “Priyotoma”, directed by Himel Ashraf, will begin production in Australia very soon. The production of another film she has been working on, titled “Chittagainga Pola Noakhailla Maiya,” directed by Uttam Akash, is currently postponed because Shakib is currently abroad. The duo has occupied the theatres this year. It seems the screen share time of the duo will continue in 2018 as well.Mahiya Mahi:
Action girl Mahiya Mahi suddenly declared her marriage and thus sparked many controversies. According to critics, it was a wrong. They also claimed that an industry invests a lot behind a heroine and the heroine should respect that. Mahiya Mahi made a big time appearance in the blockbuster “Dhaka Attack”, but she was not seen in any promotional campaigns of the film. However, she did join the promo campaign with “Dhaka Attack” team for a few days before the film was released.
Mahi also confirmed signing few new films and has already started shooting with actor Bappi Chowdhury in Gazi Jahangir’s upcoming film “Premer Badhon.” The production of Meher Afroz Shaon’s film “Nokkhotrer Raat” has commenced with Mahi in lead. Mahiya Mahi has received a number of film offers and certainly she is going to make headlines all year long in 2018.Pori Moni:
Pori Moni took the social media with storm with her personal life and love life. She was applauded for celebrating Eid Ul Azha with Bangladesh Film Development Corporation's junior artists. At the end of the year, she captured the lime light with the film “Ontor Jala” starring Zayed Khan.
On the final day of Bengal Classical Music Festival 2017 Pori is seen in a completely different look in Gias Uddin Selim’s second and upcoming feature “Swapnajaal’s” trailer. Pori Moni is the lead along with Yash Rohan in the film. The film also stars Iresh Zaker, Fazlur Rahman Babu, Misha Shawdagar and more. Though the audience is excited about the film's trailer, it has not been submitted to the censor board yet. The film’s director plans to do it within the first few days of 2018. The film is ready along with posters and banners for its promotional campaign. Pori, on the other hand, has decided to stay with good scripts and good characters throughout the year.
In an industry dominated by men, our women are becoming a part of the discourse. In 2017 they put on their armour, and 2018 is the year we expect them to break barriers just the way they did in 2017.
