Former social welfare minister and lawmaker Dipu Moni was released on a 12-hour parole on Thursday to attend the funeral of her late husband, Barrister Toufiq Nawaz.

She was taken from Munshiganj District Jail to her Kalabagan residence in Dhaka in a prison van under tight police security at around 6:15am. She arrived at the residence at around 9:15am.

Dipu Moni broke down in tears after seeing her husband's body, which had been brought to the residence. His relatives also became emotional.

Dipu Moni's lawyer, Gazi Faisal, told reporters that she and Toufiq Nawaz first met at the Kalabagan residence.

The funeral prayer will be held at Gulshan Azad Mosque, followed by burial at Banani Cemetery, he said.

Dipu Moni's daughter, Tani Deepavali Nawaz, applied to the district commissioner for her mother's parole on Wednesday. Following the application, Dipu Moni was granted parole for 12 hours, from 6am to 6pm on Thursday.

Barrister Toufiq Nawaz, 76, died while undergoing treatment at Continental Hospital, formerly United Hospital, in Gulshan on Tuesday night. He had been suffering from kidney and liver complications for a long time.

Dipu Moni was arrested from the Baridhara DOHS area on August 19 following the fall of the Awami League government during the July 2024 mass uprising. She has since been held at Munshiganj District Jail in connection with a case filed over the incident.
