Toufiq laid to rest in Banani, Dipu Moni behind bars by 6pm

Former minister Dipu Moni is detained in Munshiganj jail over several July uprising cases

Update : 20 Aug 2026, 07:46 PM

Toufiq Nawaz, husband of former Awami League minister Dipu Moni and a Supreme Court lawyer, was laid to rest at Banani graveyard on Thursday afternoon.
The burial was completed around 2:45pm in the rain, with Nawaz was buried beside his father Aminur Rahman and mother Khairun Nessa.

Dipu Moni, who was granted 12-hour parole to attend her husband’s funeral and burial, was present at the graveyard under tight security. Their daughter, Dipanbita Nawaz, placed soil on her father’s grave.

Banani graveyard mosque imam Omar Faruk led the dua after the burial, which Dipu Moni and other mourners attended. She later visited the grave of her father, M A Wadud, one of the founding leaders of the Awami League.

At around 3:15pm, Dipu Moni was taken back to Munshiganj district jail in a prison van under heavy security. The van entered the jail at 5:58pm, just two minutes before her parole expired.

Dipu Moni, an Awami League leader and former minister, is currently detained in Munshiganj jail in several cases filed following the July uprising.

She left the jail at 6:15am in a prison van under heavy police escort and reached her Kalabagan residence around 8:15am. Nawaz’s body was also taken there and kept in a freezer van in the garage.

Awami League leader from Chandpur Zakia Sultana Shefali visited Dipu Moni to offer condolences.

“She is not well. Anyone can understand what she is going through at this time,” she said.

A freezer van carrying Nawaz’s body left for Azad Mosque in Gulshan in the afternoon, while Dipu Moni was taken there separately in a prison van.

The namaz-e-janaza was held after Zuhr prayers, with Dipu Moni waiting inside the prison van outside the mosque. After the prayers, she got out and saw her husband for the last time in an emotional moment.

Nawaz’s younger brother, Taimur Nawaz, spoke on behalf of the family. Family members, relatives, friends, colleagues and former classmates attended the funeral, including lawyers Mohsin Rashid, Monirul Alam and Syed Ashraful Haque.

Toufiq Nawaz, 76, died at Continental Hospital in Dhaka, formerly United Hospital, on Tuesday night. He had been suffering from kidney and liver complications for a long time. He also practised classical music and suffered a stroke in 2019.

On May 27, relatives took him to court in a wheelchair to see his wife, who was then in custody.
