Former education minister Dipu Moni’s daughter has applied for her seven-day parole release on humanitarian grounds, citing the critical illness of her father.
The application was submitted on Wednesday to the Munshiganj deputy commissioner by Tani Dipaboli Nawaz, daughter of Dipu Moni.
Confirming the matter, Dipu Moni’s lawyer Gazi Faisal Islam said she is currently detained at Munshiganj District Jail, while her husband is in critical condition.
“Her daughter has sought a seven-day parole release so she can be by his side,” he said.
According to the application, Dipu Moni was arrested on August 20, 2024, in a case filed with Mohammadpur Police Station. She was later shown arrested in 37 more cases and has remained imprisoned in Munshiganj District Jail since then as an accused in multiple under-investigation cases.
The application states that her husband, Towfiq Nawaz, is suffering from severe health complications, including cancer, liver disease and stroke-related conditions. He is currently undergoing treatment in the CCU of a private hospital in the capital in critical condition. His health reportedly deteriorated sharply after a blood transfusion on Tuesday.
The petition further says Dipu Moni has been in jail for nearly 21 months and has been unable to remain beside her husband during his prolonged illness. It argues that her presence is urgently needed to oversee his treatment and support him during this critical period.
The application also states that, on humanitarian grounds, she should be granted seven days’ parole to care for her seriously ill husband and remain beside him if his condition worsens further.
Following the fall of the Awami League government, police arrested Dipu Moni on August 19, 2024. She has remained in custody since then.
