DU Chhatra League leaders resign en masse over quota protest

At least 22 leaders from different units of the Chhatra League quit

In the wake of clashes and attacks on students demanding quota reforms, there has been a wave of voluntary resignations by leaders and activists of the Chhatra League from various halls and faculty units at Dhaka University. 

The wave of resignations began on Monday evening. 

As of the latest reports, at least 22 leaders from different units of the Chhatra League have resigned. 

Five of them resigned immediately after the prime minister's speech on the quota movement on Sunday.

Additionally, it has been reported that several members have left various organizational messenger groups due to the organization’s involvement in attacks.

The resigning leaders have also announced their decisions on their personal Facebook profiles. The resigning members include:

Jannatul Mawa, vice president of Ruqayyah Hall Chhatra League, Hasibul Hasan Hasib, vice president of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall Chhatra League, Juena Alam Mun, treasurer of Bangladesh-Kuwait Maitree Hall Chhatra League, Sirajam Monira Tisha, law secretary of the same hall, Amrin Jannat Tairu, publicity secretary of the same hall, Meherun Nisa Mim, drama and literature secretary of the same hall.

Other resignations include:

Sadi Ahmed, general secretary of Engineering Faculty, Nurul Islam Hridoy, vice president of Social Sciences Faculty, Zeba Saima, deputy secretary of the same faculty, Wasik, vice president of Sergeant Zahurul Haq Hall, Israt Jahan Sumana, deputy library secretary of Shamsun Nahar Hall, Shah Saqib Sadman Pranto, joint secretary of Bijoy Ekattor Hall, Md Rafiqul Islam Rafi, Member of Jasimuddin Hall, and Mehedi Hasan, executive member of the same hall.

Additionally, on the night of the Prime Minister's speech, the following members resigned: Masum Shahriar, Ratul Ahmed alias Shraban, Md Muhaiminul Islam, Ashiqur Rahman alias Jim, and Russell Hossain.

Hasibul Hasan Hasib, Vice President of Bangabandhu Hall Chhatra League, wrote on Facebook: "I, Hasibul Hasan Hasib, vice president of Bangabandhu Hall BCL, Dhaka University, am severing all ties with the Chhatra League. Many of my younger brothers and friends have been brutally beaten. I am ashamed of having worked as an activist for so long. Farewell, Bangladesh Chhatra League!"

Juena Alam Mun, treasurer of Bangladesh-Kuwait Maitree Hall BCL, wrote: "I joined Chhatra League thinking it was a beacon of justice. But now, when I think of my association with this organization, I remember the faces of my bloodied friends, seniors, and juniors. Therefore, I am voluntarily and consciously resigning."

On social media, classmates of those involved in the attacks have announced a social boycott and the severance of all relations with them.
