A chase and counter-chase between police and BNP leaders and activists occurred in Dhaka’s Kakrail area on Saturday, creating panic among people.
The BNP men also set a police box on fire in front of Kakrail Church at 1:10pm and staged a demonstration by burning a tyre at Kakrail Mosque intersection.
Witnesses said leaders and activists of BNP brought out a procession in the Kakrail area and started going towards InterContinental hotel around 1pm.
At one stage, police obstructed them, and BNP leaders and activists started throwing brick chips at the law enforcers.
Later, police fired rubber bullets, used sound grenades and tear gas shells to disperse them.
Meanwhile, a man was injured when BNP men reportedly attacked him, suspecting him to be a supporter of Awami League in the Kakrail area around 12:45pm.
Besides, clashes took place in front of the capital's Kakrail intersection, High Court area and the chief justice's residence. BNP activists vandalized the gate of the chief justice's residence. The incident started around 1pm.
In front of the chief justice's residence, BNP activists broke tree branches and attacked the nameplate and gate with hand sticks. They also started throwing bricks inside.
Earlier in the day, miscreants vandalized three vehicles in Kakrail area.
The grand rally of BNP has begun in front of its Naya Paltan central office with the participation of thousands of leaders and activists of the party and its associate bodies to press home their one-point demand for holding the upcoming national election under a non-party government.
The rally formally began around 12:40pm with recitation from the holy Quran.
