Police on Monday used water cannons and sound grenades to disperse dismissed Bangladesh Rifles members gathered at the Kakrail Mosque intersection, forcing them to relocate to the Central Shaheed Minar.
As of the afternoon, they have not announced any new programs.
The dismissed BDR personnel alleged that police used excessive force on their peaceful sit-in at Kakrail, deploying water cannons and sound grenades.
Several protestors were reportedly injured in the incident and 13 individuals, including one woman, were detained by law enforcement.
Sudarshan Chakma, one of the protesting ex-BDR members, said he had been stationed in Feni during the 2009 BDR carnage but was dismissed regardless.
He added that he is currently working in mushroom cultivation.
“Our protest is not unreasonable. We see no justification for such police action,” Sudarshan said.
“Our representatives have gone to the local police station to negotiate the release of the detainees. Once they return, we will decide on our next course of action," he added.
The dismissed BDR personnel have placed three demands: reinstatement to service with compensation, annulment of the controversial provision of the commission formed to investigate the Pilkhana carnage, and restoration of the name “BDR” along with the release of imprisoned BDR members.
