Police have detained BNP Standing Committee Member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy along with some other BNP men from Dholaikhal area in the capital.

They were picked up in a police car around 12pm after a clash.

Meanwhile, BNP has claimed that party's Dhaka Divisional Organizing Secretary Abdus Salam Azad has been arrested in connection with the clash during the program at the same spot.

BNP Standing Committee members Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy and other leaders and activists were present during the clash.

Gayeshwar Chandra Roy was injured in the clash, claimed BNP.

Zafar Hussain, deputy commissioner of Lalbagh zone of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), said that there was no permission from the DMP for the sit-ins program.

“But since morning, BNP leaders and activists gathered and took position on the streets. When they were obstructed, they attacked the police. We were forced to resist them. We have detained Gayeswar Chandra Roy who led such movement and taken him into custody,” said the police official.

Leaders and activists of the BNP and police became embroiled in sporadic clashes in Old Dhaka's Dholaikhal when the party was holding a sit-in in the area on Saturday morning.

The two groups chased each other at around 11:30am.

At one point law enforcement fired tear gas at the protesters while BNP men lobbed crude bombs at police.

The BNP at a rally on Friday announced that it was going to hold sit-ins at different entry points of Dhaka on Saturday to press home its demand for the general election to be held under a non-partisan government.
