At least 50 people, including journalists, have been injured in clashes between BNP men and police over a human chain organized in Habiganj, marking International Human Rights day.

The incident took place at around 12:30pm in Habiganj city’s Shayestha Nagar area.

At least 20 people, including MyTV correspondent Shuvo and Desh TV correspondent Hamza, have been sent to various private hospitals in Habiganj.

Some shops and cars were also vandalized during the clashes.

Locals said the district BNP organized a human chain demanding justice on the occasion of International Human Rights Day. At the end of the human chain, BNP leaders and activists threw brickbats targeting the police, and the law enforcement agency fired tear shells to bring the situation under control.

When contacted, Ajay Chandra Deb, officer-in-charge of Habiganj police station, said the clash was still going on.

Security measures have been heightened in front of the National Press Club in Dhaka to avoid any untoward incidents as the opposition BNP has formed a human chain.

Additional police and water cannons were seen deployed in the area. There were also plain-clothes law enforcement officers on the site.

The program began formally with the recitation from the holy Quran around 10:55am with BNP Standing Committee Member Selima Rahman in the chair, and ended at 12:30pm.

However, leaders and activists of the opposition and other organizations were seen carrying small marches after that.
